The Year of Return was declared by the Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo last year. The aim and objective behind  the Year of Return was to encourage African-Americans and African Diasporans to return to their motherland to commemorate 400 years since the first slave ship left the shores of Africa and arrived at the shores of America.

The Year of Return was very successful in terms of the events, programs and activities that were organised for the ‘returnees’ to engage in.

A lot of well-known African-American Hollywood stars also bought into the Year of Return idea and embarked on a trip to Ghana. Individuals like Steve Harvey, Samuel L Jackson, Lupita Nyong’o, Ludacris, T.I were all in Ghana.

Due to the success of the Year of Return initiative, the government of Ghana has launched another initiative for 2020 dubbed “Beyond the Return, The Diaspora Dividend.”

According to President Akufo-Addo, “we should now look beyond the return, and build on the dividends chalked. The time has come to engage Africans in the diaspora and all persons of African descent more positively in areas such as trade and investment co-operation, and skills and knowledge development.”

Well, Nigeria does not want Ghana to enjoy all the attention it got from the Year of Return so it has reportedly also launched an initiative similar to the Year of Return which they call the “Door of Return – Nigeria 2020.”

This is according to artworks we found on social media. And just like the Year of Return, Nigeria’s Door of Return aims as encouraging African Diasporans to come to Nigeria to settle and invest.
